Art is Gabrielle's passion, but her parents have other plans
for her future-marriage to a man three times her age who holds nothing but
disdain for art. Gabrielle is determined to escape life as the baron's trophy
wife and the confinement of traditional roles. She flees her privileged home in
the French countryside for Paris and the grandmother who understands her
passion. When she cannot locate her grandmother, Gabrielle is left on her own
in the City of Lights. The art world of Paris, 1900, brims with excitement,
opportunity, and risk. Should Gabrielle trust her new friends, or will they
take advantage of her hopes and dreams?
Brenda Joyce Leahy has travelled to France five times but
finds there’s always more explorations awaiting her. She loves historical
fiction and thinks she was born a century too late but can’t imagine her life
without computers or cell phones. So, perhaps, she arrived in the world at just
the right moment to tell this story.
She grew up on a farm near Taber, Alberta but now lives with
her family near the Rocky Mountains in Calgary, Alberta. After over 20 years
practising law, she has returned to her first love of writing fiction. She is a
member of several writing organizations, including the Society of Children’s
Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI): her profile there is
http://www.scbwi.org/members-public/brenda-johnson-2. The Art of Rebellion is
also profiled on the Humber School of Writers’ website at
http://creativearts.humber.ca/programs/school-writers/published-books. Brenda
is also a member of the Historical Novel Society:
http://www.historicalnovelsociety.org, and leads a YA/MG writers’ critique
group in Calgary.
The Art of Rebellion is her first Young Adult novel,
published by Rebelight Publishing, spring 2016.

The dream cast
because I want to know how the author picture the characters in their minds?
Wow, this was
a bit of a tough question because I’m less familiar with younger actors who
could play the roles of my characters. I asked my critique group for some help
on this. Once I gave myself over to the question, it was so much fun so thank
you for asking!!
Here goes:
Gabrielle – I’d definitely ask for Lily Collins – I loved
her in The Blind Side; more recently in Love, Rosie and The Mortal Instruments.
She has a naïveté about her but passion and toughness, too. A close second
would be Shailene Woodley, from the Divergent series because she has a softer,
gentle side to her toughness.
Philippe - OK so
don’t laugh but I had in mind a younger version of Canada’s prime minister,
Justin Trudeau, with that strong jaw and dark curly locks. But I think you were
asking for actors, so I would love to see Scott Eastwood (Clint Eastwood’s son)
or Matthew Daddario (Shadowhunters) as Philippe. Another great choice would be
Sam Claflin (Me Before You, and Love,Rosie with Lily Collins!).
Maman – Judi Densch would make a daunting Maman but
is probably too old for the role (Maman is in her late forties),so I’d say Toni
Colette, Sandra Bullock or French actress Marion Cotillard (Academy award
winner, Inception, The Dark Knight Rises).
Babette – There are many actresses who could play
Babette. I see her as china doll pretty, yet something rotten lurking beneath
her lovely exterior. So, I’d see Mila Kunis, Britt Robertson(The Longest Ride)
or Katie Findlay (How to Get Away With Murder) as good choices. Eva Green
(Casino Royale) could play this role fabulously but might be too old now for
the part.
Gaston – Oh, this one is fun to cast! Either Johnny Depp
or Robert Downey, Jr. would equally play this suave but dangerous man.
Papa – Ralph Fiennes. Can’t think of anyone else
who fits the bill.
Genevieve – French actress Audrey Tautou (Amélie, Da
Vinci Code), although she’s a bit older she could pull this off.
Bernadette – I think the French actress Clémence Poesy (Harry Potter – she played Fleur) would
be perfect for Gabbi’s best friend.
