-GoodReads (quote):
After the grisly murder of his entire family, a toddler wanders into a graveyard where the ghosts and other supernatural residents agree to raise him as one of their own.Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, is a normal boy. He would be completely normal if he didn't live in a sprawling graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a solitary guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor of the dead. There are dangers and adventures in the graveyard for a boy. But if Bod leaves the graveyard, then he will come under attack from the man Jack—who has already killed Bod's family . . .
Beloved master storyteller Neil Gaiman returns with a luminous new novel for the audience that embraced his New York Times bestselling modern classic Coraline. Magical, terrifying, and filled with breathtaking adventures, The Graveyard Book is sure to enthrall readers of all ages.

"Rattle his bones
Over the stones
it's only a pauper
who nobody owns"
A traditional nursery rhyme.
It hit me that there
are only few children books with very sad begging but the
graveyard book is by far the saddest of them all, yet exciting. It began
with Darkness, knife and death. It began with an eighteen months
old baby boy escaping his fate from death running to the graveyard while all
are dead and one lady Mrs. Owns took an oath to the dead mother
of the little boy whom we will by further know
his name to be Nobody Owns. Nobody found love, home within
the Cemetery -including the freedom of the graveyard- and
a guardian named Silas who had both freedom of
the graveyard and the living world but he was another worldly creature who
connected Bod -Nobody Owns- to the knowledge of the living but
never let him be among them for he knew the great secret behind
Bod's biological parents death. While Bod grow between
the coffins he was a little happy child loved by all
inhabitants of the Cemetery; indeed they became his friends and some
taught him how to keep himself safe -even the one who thought she hates him
aka Miss Lupescu- and perhaps that what made him to believe
that he is one of them so when.
Speaking of the rest of Bod's
days he used to play and had one and only living friend - Scarlett- who thought
him to be a ghost and soon both shall be lost to the Sleer who had just one
free that there master will never be back. Bod was lost to ghouls where you can
only join them or be eaten so Silas had to save but there were grave danger
ahead by of Jake of "the Jake of all trade" who killed his
parents used his only friend to get to him but that was there mistake to even
think to hurt Bod. Now they all are dead and Bod is old enough to go around our
living world.
"The
graveyard book is a very Gothic story with yet happiness, mystery, love,
friendship and above all home. I have never found more joy than reading a story
with most of its characters are dead but has their own world and even
wonderful the Danse Macabre (Dance of Death) . It also proved you
can be family without sharing the same blood and the end of
"Jake of all trade" was not indeed by Bod but with their stupidity which
led them all to dead. At the end I have said many spoilers about this
story but this is a story for all ages to enjoy and for much more
enjoyable pages. A story all must read"
"Dark, vivid and magnificent."
You make some very good points. It's interesting how we identify with the dead characters so easily. And yes, family comes in many forms. Have you read Coraline or Odd and The Frost Giants? I've enjoyed those two as well.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, I am glad that a great reviewer like you liked my review. I think we identify with the dead because they have seen it all and not have code of honor; they kept him safe better than others. I can never think Bod would become such wonderful unless he has been living with the dead.
DeleteI have always been wanting to read Odd and The Frost Giants and Coraline but I could not find a hard copy over here (Egypt) but I will look for them again :) ...
Thanks again :D ...
Great review. And so true that families come in many forms. Its great how this book shows it.
ReplyDeleteIt's just wonderful how the book shows Bod's new family. I just want to re-read the whole book again...
DeleteIt's the writing that makes a character great and endearing. Neil Gaiman certainly has a knack for that. I've been meaning to read this one and your insightful review convinced me to take care of that next month.
